SUMMER 2004

Peterborough DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL -

Armed Services Finance Ltd Team

raises  £2,100  for charity.

“More Fun than the Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race!”

This year as part of our involvement in the local community and raising money for good causes, a team from Karl Shearer House participated in Peterborough’s Annual Dragon Boat Race.

“Dragon Boat Racing is an ancient Chinese tradition and the fastest growing water activity in Britain today – as well as the most fun! Up to 16 people paddle each 40’ boat with a drummer at the front beating time and a helm at the tail steering a straight course. No previous experience required just team spirit. Ideal for us!”

Held on the River Nene in Peterborough the 2004 event - organised by Gable Events who have over 15 years experience in corporate event management - is the city’s sixth charity Dragon Boat Festival and is open to everyone.  The 52 competing crews battled it out over the 250m racecourse, watched by several thousand spectators and covered by 102.7 Hereward Radio. Embankment entertainment ensured the day was a real family event.

Despite overcast weather, virtually no pre-race practicing and almost capsizing once, we finished in an admirable 37th place, in front of a crowd of thousands.

As part of the fun our team comprising of staff and family from the Peterborough office achieved  £2,100 in sponsorship, which we donated to our chosen charity -The Army Benevolent Fund.
